CATALOG LIBRARIAN,
THE SCHOOL OF THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO

The John M. Flaxman Library of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago
seeks an experienced cataloger to serve as Catalog Librarian.  For many
years The School of the Art Institute of Chicago has consistently ranked
as one of the top BFA/MFA programs in the country.  The Flaxman Library,
with a staff of 12 (full and part time), serves a student population of
2000 FTE.  We are a circulating, open-stack library supporting the entire
curriculum of the School.  Collections include over 60,000 volumes on art
and the liberal arts and sciences, approximately 350 current periodical
subscriptions, as well as films, videos, audio tapes, records =26 CDs,
interactive CD-ROMs, microforms, archival collections and picture files.
Our Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection contains over 3,500 artists' books
along with a supporting research collection of exhibition catalogs and other
related materials.  Full web access is available at every computer in the
library, along with links to numerous subscription online services (visit
our web site at www.artic.edu ).  Students, faculty and staff may also
utilize the research collections at The Video Data Bank, The Art Institute
of Chicago Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, The Art Institute Archives, and
The MacLean Visual Resource Center.  They have full borrowing privileges at
most other college libraries in the Chicago area through Flaxman Library's
participation in the ILLINET consortium.  We are planning for significant
expansion of the library facilities within the next few years.  This is an
exciting time of growth for the school and the library.  We are looking for
a dedicated person to join our productive team of library staff members.
This is a full-time, professional position with supervisory duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for coordinating the cataloging, classification and processing
of all library materials (books, serials, videos, films, CD-ROMs, audio
recordings, special collections,...).  Responsible for copy and original
cataloging.  Supervises the cataloging team and serves as principle =
cataloger
for Technical Services.  Interprets rules, national standards, local =
policies
and procedures for the library staff.  Coordinates local contributions to
cooperative cataloging and bibliographic control programs including OCLC and
ILLINET Online.  Works with the Head of Technical Services to establish =
goals
and priorities. Assumes a leadership role in managing cataloging work flow.
Assists with staff training.  Supervises one part-time professional staff
member.  Hires, trains and supervises one to three student workers each
semester.  Performs a minimum of two hours weekly public service (e.g. at =
the
Reference Desk or in a library outreach project, as assigned).  Reports to
the Head of Technical Services.


REQUIRED
=2A ALA accredited MLS
=2A minimum of three years cataloging experience in a professional,
supervisory position
=2A knowledge of LC classification schedules and subject headings, AACR2+, =
MARC
=2A substantial experience with OCLC or another major bibliographic utility
=2A fluency in the Windows environment
=2A demonstrated supervisory skills
=2A demonstrated ability to engage staff in the process of planning
=2A ability to provide leadership for change
=2A strong commitment to patron service
=2A excellent communication and interpersonal skills

PREFERRED
=2A degree(s) in the arts or humanities
=2A experience cataloging in the ILLINET Online system and/or DRA
=2A experience cataloging non-English-language materials
=2A knowledge of basic preservation principles
=2A familiarity with the academic environment

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Starting salary =2430,000 to =2433,500.  Generous benefits package.
