The first college in the country to admit women, Oberlin also was an early leader in the education of blacks. Abolitionists played a major role in Oberlin's early history, and students at Oberlin, which was once a stop on the Underground Railroad, retain a concern for social justice. The campus is located in the heart of a small community (pop. 8,000), 35 miles southwest of Cleveland=22 (Cass =26 Birnbaum=B9s Comparative Guide to American Colleges, 1998). The college actively seeks a racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse staff and student body. Oberlin has one of the nation's largest and most complex college library systems. Its 1.2 million volume collection, located in the main Library and four branches, serves a student body of 2,700 undergraduates. The staff consists of 18.5 professionals and 33.5 FTE support personnel. The library is fully automated with the Innopac system and is a member of OhioLINK.
