At the risk of being a pain in the neck, I'd like to post this plea
again for help for the library collection in Bratislava, Slovakia. If
any of you have extra materials in the area of Greek or Roman
archaeology, their need is real. Professor Rose just heard from his
colleague again in this matter.
I'm sure this is just one example of the problems poor Slovakia is
having after their split from the much wealthier Czech Republic.

Dear Professor Rose,
I am the newly appointed assistant professor of Classical Archaeology in
the Department of Archaeology, Commenius University in Bratislava,
Slovak
republic. I am writing to request assistance for our library.
Post-communist central Europe is currently not the easiest place to live
in. Certain structures that used to work in the former Czechoslovakia
have
been dismantled after the republic split and the new Czech and Slovak
republics peacefully emerged. Archaeology has been influenced as well by
these latest developments. Classical archaeology was taught only in
Prague
(then capital of the Czechslovakia and now capital of the Czech
republic)
and the newly created Slovak republic was left without Classical
archaeology at all. Since the split it has been one of the main aims of
the
Commenius University in Bratislava (the capital of Slovakia) to found
specialisations that have previously only been taught in the Czech
republic. Classical archeology is one of them. In the current economical
situation, we received only good will and free rooms from the
university.
Especially critical is the state of our library. We have some older
books
on Aegean prehistory and very little for the later periods. Since we are
at
the very beginning, the department has so far no exchange programs, and
we
have nothing to exchange for. I would therefore greatly appreciate any
help
in form of duplicate books in the storerooms of your department, or even
your own off-prints. We would be especially interested in teaching
materials. Even older textbooks would be fine. What we really need are
books that might seem traditional to you (like Richter's Kouroi and
Korai).
The department has traditionally dealt more with ancient art history
than
social history. However, we are trying to keep up with the latest
developments, especially in the English speaking countries, and books on
anthropology or archaeological method and theory would also be welcome.
