The Queens College Art Center, a gallery located in the Benjamin S. Rosenthal
Library of Queens College in Flushing, New York, is proud to present an
exhibition by John Crawford. Entitled, "Architypes: Sculpture by John
Crawford," the exhibition is being held from October 7 to November 1, 1999.
John Crawford is best known at Queens College for his monumental permanent
sculpture called "Queens College Marker" located in the plaza between
Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library and Powdermaker Hall and erected in August
1994. As one of the largest public sculptures in New York City, it is
also its only forged and machined one. "Queens College Marker," Crawford
says, "is the first realization of my personal expression on a large scale."
The Art Center exhibition, consisting of small-scale works and works on
paper, refers to "Queens College Marker" in the plaza and places it in
the context of Crawford's work. Many are being shown for the first time.
Crawford earned a B.F.A. in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of
Design. After art school, Crawford was an apprentice to Italian blacksmiths
in a sixteenth-century water-powered blacksmith shop in rural Tuscany. For
a sculptor with a visual interest in farm tools, their vocabulary of shapes was
exciting. "Queens College Marker" is a sculptural culmination of the
evolution from his apprenticeship making farm tools to an involvement
with the largest forging equipment in America.
Crawford has exhibited widely. The Mead Art Museum at Amherst College
owns another commission, "Amherst Markers." Crawford is represented in
numerous public and private collections.
A handsome 16 page illustrated catalog is available for $6.00, tax included
(enquiries to [log in to unmask]). Exhibition hours are Monday to
Thursday, 9am to 8pm; Friday, 9am to 5pm, and Sunday, 12 to 6pm. "Queens
College Marker" can be viewed anytime the College is open. For more
