Dear ARLIS-L subscribers,
Some one forwarded this thread on to the Getty Vocabulary Program.
Ms. Lowenstein is right that the AAT does not have a term for this
portrait type. I consulted an art historian at UCLA whose specialty is
Renaissance portraiture, and she in turn consulted a colleague whose
specialty is 18th century French painting. Neither of them knew of any
standard term for this type of portrait.
If anyone has contributed information to the list about a term for
this, I'd be interested to receive a forwarded copy.
It sounds like they might look something like playing cards. ?!
Regards,
