Alex:
As the executive board liaison for the Diversity Committee, of which GLIRT
has membership, might I make a comment or two? I take it that your initial
comment about sexism and GLIRT brought unexpected reactions from our
membership. This is all the more ironic since the exchange was intended
principally to be internal. However, with whatever good or humorous
intentions you meant in your most recent remarks, it really is a sleight to
accuse people of being "uptight" because they disagree with someone. Other
members of the Society have spoken to the specific issues of gay and
lesbian issues within ARLIS more elequently than I could. Speaking
personally, I disagree with yout that *every* issue has a funny side. In
the United States, at least, people are murdered (and removed from office)
for personal proclivities not associated with their job performance.
Better than asking people to laugh at comments of diametrically opposed to
their own experience, perhaps you might stick to issues. The ARLIS-L needs
to continue to be a forum of discussion--allowing many points of
view--without, I hope, speculations on why members respond with a
particular level of vehemence. That truly is the level of Diversity which
ARLIS seeks.
