You might want to consider some further historical resources:
The Pierrepont Morgan Library, NYC, has a superb children's literature
collection, condition and rarity being among the collecting criteria.
Heavily illustrated, selections have been exhibited from time to time.
A catalog(s) exist, one by Robin Gottlieb, then the Curator of Early
Childrens' Books, ca. late 1970s/early 1980s.
The Francis Henne Collection of Children's Literature at Columbia
University, Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Butler Library, documents
the period 1850-1950 from the perspective of popular culture. Caring
little for condition, she gathered much of what was read and rarely
survived because such items were much read/handled.
The Ruth Baldwin Collection at the Univ. of Fla. at Gainesville is
100,000 strong. Ms. Baldwin taught childrens' literature at one of the
Louisiana library schools for many years.
Animation students should be made aware of the value of such
retrospective materials in terms of developing their own creativity in
animation. If they travel they may want to incorporate visits to such
collections.
