A footnote to Beryl Smith's comment about foreign-language citations
in the RAA: the RAA file has ca. 51,000 English-language records,
about the same as RILA. We have never measured the degree of overlap
between the two files, but as a general rule the RAA is stronger than
RILA in post-classical archaeology and medieval art, so for students
interested in those fields (as well as others, though less
predictably) it's certainly worth searching the RAA as well.
Incidentally, some English indexing (based on BHA terminology) has
been added to the RAA file on RLIN, but not on the CD.
I generally concur with Beryl's comments about the differences
between the CD and online versions: the CD permits more refined and
faster searches, with greater control and more varied displays. The
merging of the three files (RILA, RAA, and BHA) online in RLIN has
the obvious advantage of allowing a single search across the files,
but the not-so-obvious disadvantage that the indexing terminology is
inconsistent from file to file.
