Got to jump into the fray in defense of the Mac. I use both systems,
because my clients use both. I do all my work on the Mac which talks quite
smoothly to the Windows machine. I do this for 2 reasons.
I can fix my Mac. I do not require an IS group to keep it running smoothly
and I would never feel comfortable being dependent on my Win 95 machine.
The second reason is that the Mac still has the best color calibration
capability, especially when printing an image. The Mac may become more
limited and is already in some specialized situations, but it is not going to
disappear. You should get what works for you.
While Mary Molinaro is correct to say to buy open ended so that you don't
limit yourself, you can't buy for tomorrow, cause nobody knows what that will
be. We may all be on the Net with Netpcs. And while machines may become
"obsolete" they still can perform the function you bought them for.
As far as databases go, which is what I do, the library and art collection
database is so specialized in cataloging needs, I recommend, buying one which
has already been developed and not reinventing the wheel. If you want one
just for you then use FileMakerPro. But other people already have solved
alot of the problems you will uncover.
