Stan Shiebert asked for the name of the artist of the painting "Madonna of the
Street". According to our files it was painted by Roberto Ferruzzi of Venice.
We have on file an article about the model for the painting
"Our Sunday Visitor", July 26, 1987, Feature Section, page 3. It mentions that
the work was first exhibited in Venice in 1897. The model was one Angela Cian
Bovo, who was spotted by the artist, so the story goes, when she was 11 years
old and caring for her younger brother.
To quote the article: "...the reproduction often seen that includes the halo
around the mother and clouds is not authentic. The genuine Ferruzzi print
depicted a woman without a halo standing next to a pillar..."
The newspaper article refers to the painting as "Madonna of the Streets",
but the reproduction shown is that of a painting we also know as "Madonna of
the Street".
Hope this helps.
