TO: Readers of ARLIS-L
FROM: Executive Board, Art Libraries Society, New York Chapter
SUBJECT: ARLIS/NY Memorial Fund
Members of the New York Chapter of ARLIS/NA were saddened
to hear of the untimely death of George Simor on July 3, 1996.
George's wife Suzanna has been active for many years in ARLIS/NA
and ARLIS/NY, serving as Chair of the local chapter in 1990,
and George was a familiar presence at chapter meetings and events.
He had recently retired after serving as Chief Acquisition
Librarian of the Graduate School and University Center of the
City University of New York for more than twenty years, but
continued to teach at the library schools of Pratt Institute
and St. John's University, where many of us received from him
our first introduction to technical services, rare books and
special collections, archives and records management, and a
host of other topics.
The news of his death prompted the Board of ARLIS/NY to
establish a Memorial Fund. The Fund will provide a means of
memorializing deceased colleagues, friends, and family, or
of honoring the living by celebrating some milestone or
professional achievement. Contributions will be used to
support special lectures, workshops, seminars, tours, and
other chapter-sponsored events promoting the continuing
education and professional development of those working in
the field of art librarianship.
We invite others who had the pleasure of working with
George Simor or of attending his classes to make a
contribution to the Memorial Fund. Gifts are tax-deductible
as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.
All contributions will be acknowledged in the chapter
newsletter.
Contributions may be sent to:
Chris Sala, Treasurer, ARLIS/NY
601 W. 119th Street, #4E
New York, NY 10025
Please make out your check or money order to: ARLIS?NY, and
indicate that the gift is intended for the Memorial Fund,
in honor of George Simor.
Thank you.
