Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities
has a new web site which will provide access to a web version of
IRIS, the Research Institute's online catalog.
IRIS is the online catalog for the Resource Collections of the
Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities. It
contains records for most of the holdings of the Research
Institute's General and Special Collections, providing access to
over 350,000 book and serial titles, and to descriptions of
approximately 3,000 archival and photograph collections. The
book collection is strongest in European art, archaeology and
architecture from the Bronze Age to the present, with
representative selections of material in the humanities and related
fields such as anthropology, history, literature, and bibliography.
French, German, Russian, Italian and American avant-garde
materials represent a special strength. The periodical collection
covers European art and architecture, as well as selected titles in
philosophy, history and musicology. The Special Collections
contain rare books and archival materials for the study of art and
the humanities, and are particularly strong in primary materials for
the history of art movements such as Futurism, Dada, Surrealism,
the Bauhaus, Russian Constructivism, the Czech avant-garde, and
Fluxus. Specialized photographic resources focus on festivals,
travel, international expositions, colonialism, architecture and
urban development.
IRIS also includes the holdings of the Getty Conservation
Institute. The primary focus of the Conservation Institute's
collection of approximately 25,000 volumes is in the conservation
of cultural heritage, historic preservation, and applied science and
technology.
IRIS is searchable by author, title, subject, keyword, provenance,
date, call number, and a variety of number indexes. The system is
menu driven, offering the searcher a list of options on each screen
from which to choose.
In addition to providing access to IRIS, the web site also provides
information about the Research Institute's access policies, other
information about the services of the Resource Collections, and
includes a calendar of Research Institute events, links to other
Getty web sites and information about our publications,
exhibitions, public programs, and scholars and seminars.
