     Reference Librarian/Bibliographer, Architecture/Fine Arts Library

The Architecture/Fine Arts Library, one of eleven units of the University of
Manitoba Libraries, serves the teaching and research requirements of the
Faculty of Architecture, which consists of five graduate programs
(Architecture, City Planning, Interior Design, Facility Management,
Landscape Architecture) and two undergraduate programs (Environmental
Design, Interior Design), and the School of Art, which offers undergraduate
programs in art history and studio art.  The collection totals approximately
61,000 volumes and 443 current serial subscriptions.  Additional materials
include art reproductions, a photograph collection, building plans and maps.
 Two satellite collections are also part of the Architecture/Fine Arts
Library.  The Slide Collection contains over 107,000 slides; the Product
Catalogue Collection includes over 5,000 catalogues and samples of
architecture and design products.  The staff of the Architecture/Fine Arts
Library consists of the Head, one Reference Librarian/Bibliographer, one
library supervisor, five library assistants and several part-time employees.
 The incumbent reports to the Head.

Responsibilities of the incumbent are as follows.  Provides reference
service to students, faculty and external users.  Coordinates reference
assistance for students enrolled in distance education courses.  Provides
orientations and bibliographic instruction.  Participates in collection
development activities in the area of Fine Arts.  Acts as the liaison
between the Library and the School of Art.  Provides assistance to library
staff in the Slide Collection and Product Catalogue Collection.  Instructs
library staff in the use of a variety of CD-ROM and Internet-based
resources, and provides technical support by troubleshooting hardware and
software problems.  Responsible for creating and maintaining up-to-date
information on the library's homepage on the World-Wide Web.  Creates and
maintains guides to special materials within the collection.  Participates
in the organization, development and promotion of services and collections,
and serves on library and university committees as appropriate.

Qualifications:
A degree from an ALA-accredited library school.  An undergraduate degree in
fine arts, art history, design or a related field is required.  Experience
in an academic or special art/design library, knowledge of formal planning
processes and familiarity with bibliographic instruction and reference
services are desired.  Experience or knowledge of slides, photography and
optical technology is an asset.  Experience using MS-DOS, Windows, Macintosh
and UNIX required.  Experience in accessing art and architecture resources
on the Word-Wide Web required.  Demonstrated experience in creating
documents on the Word-Wide Web an asset.  Must be highly motivated and
self-directed, and have the ability to work independently as well as with
the "team".  Strong interpersonal communication skills are essential.  The
successful candidate is expected to participate in professional development
and relevant professional activities.

Effective date:  January 1, 1997

 Ranks and Salary Ranges:  Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
     General Librarian:            $31,746 - $41,410
This position has a two-year probationary period.  Librarians enjoy academic
status and are appointed to one of four ranks:  General, Assistant,
Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.

The filling of this position is subject to final budgetary approval.
