Dear colleagues,
Thank you to those who responded, or are about to respond, to my inquiry about
organizing auction catalogs. I will be glad to compile a summary of ideas for
the list, as someone wisely suggested. In fact, I am so encouraged by the
generosity of your response, that I am moved to call on your expertise again.
I am working with a graduate student who is writing a dissertation on batik in
the US in the early part of the twentieth century. She is interested in
documenting batik clothing, batik accessories, as well as batik decorative
objects such as pillows, wall hangings, etc.
Although her topic is specifically AMERICAN batik, she is also interested in
batik arts in other western countries during the early twentieth century as
background study for her dissertation.
Artists she has identified as significant to the development of batik arts in
the US during the early twentieth century are:
Arthur Crisp
Ethel Wallace
Amy Mali Hicks
Bertram Hartman
Hazel Burnham Slaughter
If you have resources in your library collections relating specifically to
batik in the US in the early years of this century, or to these artists, could
you please be in touch with me (please respond directly to me, not to the
list.)
Also, if you are associated with a museum, could you let me know if your museum
collection contains objects related to the topic of this dissertation? Our
student is interested in clothing, accessories, and decorative objects.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. As you can imagine, this
student has visited several collections in preparation for writing her
dissertation, and is willing to travel a great deal more, but identifying the
museums and libraries important to this topic is proving to be a challenge.
