We are by now all aware of the many informational
resources on copyright (CAUSE web pages, for example). Now
about INTERPRETING those documents for web access in a campus setting...
If you deal with electronic images, can you tell me which of the following
situations EXACTLY you regard as allowed by copyright law on campus-wide
information systems. Do your practices reflect your beliefs on this
issue? (I am not interested in the rationales, just in beliefs and
practices relating to these aspects of copyright.)
(I have been asked to advise an institution on prevailing practice,
and I do not know at this point just what to say. Any suggestions
on sources would be appreciated.)
The scenarios:
1. Mounting images on the local web made from books (without specific
copyright permission from the publishers)?
2. Mounting images on the local web scanned from slides which were
purchased from commercial suppliers before the web
came along (and before web contracts relating to them existed)?
3. Putting up just about everything in the slide collection (without
further negotiation with suppliers),
but limiting the access to the physical library/department itself?
4. Putting up just about everything in the slide collection (without
additional negotiation with suppliers),
but limiting access to the campus domain only?
5. Putting up just about everything in the slide collection (without
negotiating anew with suppliers), and giving the world access?
6. Posting ONLY those images with clear copyright (for which specific web
permissions have been obtained, or those created from the original work of
art, done in-house via original photography)?
Many, many thanks. I'll be happy to summarize results for the
list, without identifying specific institutions or individuals.
