As reported in the most recent issue of the CAA NEWS, the CAA Board of
Directors voted to reverse its boycott of California as a possible
location for the 1999 annual conference. This boycott, unanimously passed
by the Board on April 22, 1995, had been enacted in response to
Proposition 187, which is a law that denies certain public services
(including admission to public schools and universities) to illegal
immigrants in the state. The Board reversed its decision because of a
court challenge to Proposition 187 and the concern of a significant part
of the CAA membership. They hope that sessions at the 1999 conference in
Los Angeles will foster debate over the issues that have been raised by
the boycott. The Board, therefore, encourages the submission of theme
proposals that deal specifically with the issue of immigration and how it
has affected the study, teaching and creative activity of visual art.
