Position description and duties: The Music, Theater, and Dance Librarian
is the primary resource for users in the identification, location, use, and
interpretation of the Hamon's collections in music, theater, and dance.
Provides basic reference service in the other arts as required. Provides user
education in subject areas. Prepares paper and electronic handouts and
other guides in the use of the Library and its holdings. Responsible for
the selection of music, theater, and dance materials in the Hamon Arts Library.
Background: The Jake and Nancy Hamon Arts Library, a 38,000 square foot,
four floor facility houses the majority of SMU's collections in art, arts
administration, cinema, dance, music, and theater, including 80,000
cataloged books and scores, 20,000 audio and video recordings, and 262
current periodical subscriptions. It contains an audio-visual center,
computer lab, exhibition spaces, a meeting room, group and individual
studies, and a secure, climate controlled Special Collections area. The
Hamon sports a wide variety of computer technology including public and
staff microcomputers, CD-ROM and other optical disc technology, and
electronic access to other bibliographic and information utilities. This
position reports to the Director of the Hamon Arts Library, and is part of
Central University Libraries.
Qualifications:
Required: Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution;
Bachelor's degree in music, theater, or dance; familiarity with
microcomputer-based technology in libraries; good verbal and written
communication skills; ability to work effectively with faculty and
students.
Desired: Master's degree in music, theater, or dance, preferably music
history; knowledge of one or more of the following languages: French,
German, or Italian; one or more years of experience in an academic
library. Librarians are expected to build a progressively more substantive
professional/scholarly record.
Salary and Benefits: In-hire salary range is $22,000 - $24,000.
