Friends,
I have recently accepted a Fine Arts Librarian position at a large
public library. Having been a generalist in an academic library, I
was wondering if anyone could suggest a particular resource(s)
covering the basics of art librarianship.
Three particular issues that were discussed during my interview and
which I could use some information on are:
1) Developing criteria for determining which art books do not
circulate (in addition to the circulating collection they want to
build a non-circulating research collection, and apparently book
cost--unless it is extraordinarily expensive--is not a factor.
2) They would like me to create a fine arts vertical file (is this
appropriate given the Internet, and administrative time involved
considering the ephemeral nature of the material?).
3) Maintain and develop a slide collection.
Any tips on the above three issues, resources on developing a fine
arts library, and a primer for beginning art librarians would be
most appreciated. Thanks in advance.
