POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
Kansas City, Missouri


JOB TITLE:      SLIDE LIBRARIAN

JOB DUTIES:     Reports to Head Librarian.  Plans, directs, and coordinates
activities of the Slide Library covering Asian art, Western
art, arts of indigenous cultures, and the decorative arts.
Oversee photography, mounting, organization, filing, and
maintenance of slides.  Provides reference services, develops
 annual budgets, and collaborates in long-range planning.
 Directs and supervises assistant and volunteers.
                Collaborates with staff photographer to secure additions to
  the collection's master file of slides.  Assists staff
  members in assembling groups of slides for lectures and
  programs as necessary.  Works toward the computerization of
  the slide collection; develops a database to provide access
  to the slide collection.  Investigates the application of
                modern and emerging technologies for the slide collection..

                The Slide Library serves the research needs of the
                Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and users from area faculty,
                students and the general public.  In addition, it provides
                slides to the Bookstore for sale and sells slides directly
to                 the public as requested, in accordance with copyright
laws.                  Images of the Museum's Asian art collection is
particularly                  sought after.  The Library includes
approximately 80,000                     slides.

QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited MLS degree or equivalent.  M.A. in art
history                 preferred.  At least five years experience in
libraries,                     slide library preferred.  Knowlege of  image
production.                     Ability to work with all modern Western
European languages.                  Ability to work with CJK vernacular
highly desirable and                     knowledge of Asian art highly
desirable.  Excellent written                  and verbal skills; strong
attention to detail.  Experience in                 planning and
implementing computer applications to manual                    systems.
Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills, and                 ability
to interact with museum staff and the public.

SALARY:         Salary competitive and commensurate with experience; benefits
package including medical, dental, pension plan, etc.
