Hello --
In an effort to broaden representation to CONFU (Conference on Fair Use),
Mary Levering, Copyright Office, Library of Congress, has contacted ARLIS/NA
to urge us to join other library organizations, societies and interested groups
in representing our concerns during this critical stage of fair use guidelines
development.
This development and revision process is climaxing during this month, with
important meetings scheduled for May 16, May 29 and May 30 at the Library of
Congress to finalize the guidelines draft.
Now is the time for ARLIS/NA to add its voice to this important effort. Please
consider what a vital contribution you would be providing the membership of
ARLIS/NA if you would participate in these critical meetings this summer. To
emphasize this, the Public Policy Committee and the VRD, Visual Resources
Division, are jointly posting this urgent message to ARLIS-L to enlist your
participation.
Specifically, an ARLIS/NA representative would join the "Educational Fair
Use of Digital Images," group, one of five working groups currently completing
guidelines for CONFU. These small group discussions began meeting in April at
the Library of Congress, Wash., DC, and have included representatives from
numerous organizations such as: ALA, AAM, AAMD, AAP, ACLS, ACRL, ARL, ASMP,
ASPP, CCUMC, Getty Trust, LC/NDL, MLA, NCTM, NEA, NEH, NINCH, NSTA, and VRA.
Other groups are planning to join the discussions in May.
The Educational Fair Use of Digital Images group is chaired by Pat Williams,
AAM, (1-202-289-9110). The group's immediate goal is to have a working draft
for presentation at the May 30 CONFU meeting. The mid-term goal is to refine
the working draft as needed in a few subsequent working group sessions after
May 30, so that thereafter representatives can begin the field review and
approval process within their organizations. The long term goal is for guide-
lines to be approved by individual organizations during the late summer/early
fall, prior to the conclusion of the CONFU process later this calendar year.
If you have any questions, would like more information (including a copy of
the guidelines draft as of May 2) and/or would like to participate, please
contact Katy Poole ASAP.
Thank you for your attention and support.
