As a former medical librarian (who recently escaped to art last july!) I
can offer a couple ideas on this. FIrst off, remember that advertising
IS NOT indexed in most online sources, MEDLINE in particular. When
searching MEDLINE, did you use the formal MeSH subject headings? You
may want to try the search again, but consult the headings for the
appropriate term. Articles on advertising by drug companies might
be under something obtuse like "Pharmaceutical corporations--patient
education". Call your local medical librarian for help--MEDLINE is
somewhat tricky and if you don't know the search rules you can mis
alot by free texting. Might also be under ADVERTISING with the subheading
PSYCHOLOGY.
The other thought is that you may have to actually go to a journal
collection in a medical liibrary and browse through some medical
titles like JAMA, Cutis, New England Journal of Medicine or other
derm titles. Sometimes these journals publish an INDEX TO ADVERTISERS
at the end of the year or at the end of each issue. If you can compile
a list of likely drug companies, you may be able to do an effective
old-fashioned search for ads on skin products.
Finally, consider posting your question to MEDLIB-L, a national
listserv for medical librarians. They are great at answering the
difficult and obscure.
If you can't find the address, email me privately and I'll call
one of my former colleagues to get the address.
