WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY
VISUAL RESOURCES LIBRARIAN is a newly created permanent tenure-track
position, reporting to the Dean of the University Libraries, to meet the
curricular needs of the art department and future needs for access to
visual resources campus-wide. Current core collection is c. 75,000
slides and supports curriculum in studio art, art education, graphic
design and art history. Immediate priorities include collection
development in art history, database construction, cataloging and
investigation of use of digital images.
Responsibilities: Administers all aspects, including budgeting and
planning, of a rapidly growing fine arts slide collection covering
western and Asian art history, arts of indigenous cultures, and design.
Oversees acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, and preservation; also,
slide mounting and photography. Develops collection database that will
migrate to library's online catalog.
Qualifications Required: M.A. in art history and ALA-accredited MLS. At
least three years experience in a visual resources collection. Knowledge
of computer technologies and national trends in classification,
cataloging, and copyright issues. Experience with slide projection
equipment, copy photography, and slide duplicating processes. Reading
knowledge of at least one foreign language. Participation in appropriate
professional organizations. Excellent organizational and interpersonal
skills. Desirable: Supervisory experience and record of achievement in
research and publication.
Compensation: Appointment will be made at the assistant or associate
professor level, depending upon qualifications. Anticipated salary range
of $33,000 to $42,000 for a fiscal year (pending faculty contract
negoitiations) plus generous benefits.
