Austin will be in the path of totality for a solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Come for the workshop and see a total solar eclipse the day before! (Assuming weather cooperates)
The world’s “First Photograph”, the Niepce Heliograph is also on permanent display at Harry Ransom Center and will be on view during the workshop.

Whether you are an archivist or curator seeking to invest in your professional development or a collector or family historian pursuing your passion, this 4-day intensive course will introduce you to the history, identification, and preservation of photographic materials. Using a handheld microscope, participants will practice identifying 30 of the most commonly encountered photographic processes and formats ranging from daguerreotypes and cartes-de-visite to gelatin silver and inkjet prints. It will include study of color materials, and nitrate and acetate photographic films that pose preservation challenges. This workshop is intended for curators, collectors, archivists, collection managers, and anyone who studies or appreciates the materials of our photographic history.
The Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA), a certifying organization of professional archivists, will award 15 Archival Recertification Credits (ARCs) to eligible Certified Archivists (CAs) attending this workshop.
The American Society of Appraisers, the International Society of Appraisers, and the Appraisers Association of America will award 24 reaccreditation hours/professional development/continuing education credits for qualified appraisers attending this workshop.
