Thomas Register of American Manufacturers would not have a history per
se, but could reveal long years of different types of mattresses.
The online version is ThomasNet.com - I did a quick check and it looks
like current info only. Your university library may still have print
editions.
Mattresses probably started when humans did and the Thomas Register
started only in 1898 and is for the U.S. only, so is limited by time and
place.
Perhaps histories of domestic life in different parts of the world would
have something.
