Hello all,
In my former job, I managed the acquisition of new art journals for the JSTOR archive. The group in this thread has come up with good suggestions so far regarding European-centered resources. I just wanted to add that our hope, in fact, was for JSTOR to be the European equivalent of *itself*. We had a fair amount of non-English content, and when I was there, it was our goal to gather more. I negotiated arrangements with non-English-language publications in Europe, and it is not for want of trying that the archive is missing major publications like Gazette des beaux-arts, L’Architecture d’aujourd’hui, Revue de l'art, Cahiers d’art, Storia dell’arte, etc. (I still grind my teeth when I think about how close we were to signing Casabella.) I know JSTOR will keep trying to bring these publications in, but I would advocate that the community continue to let JSTOR know that this material is a priority. There is no part of their mission that says they should focus on English-only material. From a technical standpoint, the OCR work to digitize journals' back runs doesn't pose issues for European languages -- it's generally Asian languages and Arabic that still present challenges.
