Hi Kelsey et al:
Just to chime in, we are waiting to see what future file types Shared Shelf might support and will digitize our ETD's to work with that. For us, providing campus-wide access to these files is really important, so placing them somewhere the students can access these alongside their images for classes and research, institutional history images, as well as special collections, really helps the chances that they'll actually go there. Plus, with the ability to form the metadata around the collection (and our incredibly small range of subject areas) we'll be able to build out different collections pretty easily. For us, the one tool solution really fits our size. I write this today, because it might be a good solution for others in Art/Design institutions.

Actually, I'd be interested in hearing what type of data management systems other institutions have chosen to use when choosing to undertake retrospective digitization. I may undertake a project soon that will involve integrating 1000s of paper records into an electronic data management system, and I'd be curious to find out which platforms other institutions use, and if you have any strong feelings either way about the system. I'm somewhat familiar with CONTENTdm, but would like to know more about others.
Please drop me a note if you'd like to share your thoughts!
Best,
Kelsey

Thanks for all the responses everyone. Just to clarify, I'm particularly interested in any policies for access that you have worked out concerning visual art materials - MFA theses specifically. We have an institutional repository and scanning is covered.
Looking forward to hearing more!

Subject: MFA digital theses
Hi everyone, at UNC we are planning for the retrospective digitization of our MFA visual art theses (going back to 1973) and are making plans for a digital submission process for current and future MFA art theses. If you have worked on these issues and have developed policies for access at your own institution, would you get in touch with me sometime soon? We'll be working with our Scholarly Communications Officer on this, but I'm interested in hearing what other institutions have done with their digital MFA art theses.
Thanks!
