Dear all,
Thanks so much for the many good replies to my query about software for cataloging small private libraries. I was asked to summarize for the list so here goes.
About 12 people suggest LibrarThing: http://www.librarything.com/
This is free for the first 200 books, then $10.00/year or $25 for life.
ResourceMate was recommended by one colleague and is used at a museum and in a Montessori school library. It cost about $200 for software and $70 per year for support and ISBN searching. http://www.resourcemate.com/
Koha, an open source ILS was also suggested by two colleagues. http://www.koha.org/
BookCat was suggested by another colleague. It costs $40 and allows users to download information from the net: http://www.fnprg.com/bookcat/
Inmagic was also recommended: http://www.inmagic.com/dbtext
M3 by Mandarin Library Automation Solutions was another ILS that can be downloaded at no cost with support that can be paid for that was recommended: http://www.mlasolutions.com/
PastPerfect was also suggested: http://www.museumsoftware.com/
Others have continued to use custom databases in Filemaker and Access.
Thanks so much for all of your very helpful feedback and I hope this list is helpful to others. I think LibraryThing is the right solution for my colleague’s non-librarian collector friend.
All best,
Eric
