I can add to this subject also. While it has not happened to the Frick Fine Arts Library at the University of Pittsburgh, it has been happening on our campus. This past year the administration closed the separate library for Economics and Public Affairs; this December they will begin to close the Library Science Library. Books selected are sent to the main library and also storage. Several years ago the science libraries began to be combined and closed. So, yes, again doing more with less!!

Subject: Re: [ARLIS-L] Art, design, and architecture librarians with additional disciplinary responsibilities
I was recently made Head of the Literature Department at the Central Library of the Free Library of Philadelphia, in addition to my job as Head of the Art Department. Not because I have the background (or interest, really), but because they were looking for ways of reducing staff and the 2 departments share a room. The process began 2 years ago with the creation of one reference desk in the room (which required the rearrangement of the room). I insisted that if the merger of the department was to happen, I had to have a second assistant dept head who could be the subject specialist in LIT, which they agreed to, and hopefully that person will be in place by the end of the year. I am the only department head running 2 departments and I chose not to refuse or greatly protest because I didn't want to have to leave Art and the Union agreed to the changes. C'est la vie.
Fortunately I have good staff and a supervisor who puts up with me venting every few months when I get overwhelmed.
At least I have a job and am 6 years from retirement.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Art, design, and architecture librarians with additional disciplinary responsibilities
Colleagues-
I am curious how many of us have disciplinary responsibilities that are outside of the arts/architecture and related areas, and whether there have ever been even informal discussions through ARLIS on this issue, whether it is a trend, how we cope (or not), prepare the next generation for possibilities, etc., etc., etc.
