Subject: Re: [ARLIS-L] seeking indexing software for book-length text
Cindex; Sky; Macrex are all standard indexing software programs used by
professional indexers. Each has a free downloadable trial version so you can
try them out. The full package costs several hundred dollars. These are
wonderful and produce indexes in several formats
Other software that has "indexing" capability that usually turns out to
produce an alphabetical list of words from the text; there are no
cross-references, no gathering of similar concepts under an umbrella term;
no glosses explaining the difference between 2 people with the same name;
no hierarchical arrangement (heading, subheading, sub-subheading).
You might be better off hiring a professional indexer, if your project is a
one-off. See the American Society of Indexers website for members in your area.
Best wishes.
