One of my all time favorite library science articles is:
Desmond B. Maley, “Becoming a Subject Literature Expert: A Case Study
in Gerontology,” RQ 33 (Winter 1993): 205-12.
While Maley's article highlights the resources he used for
Gerontology, his methodology could be applied to many fields. I have
referred to this article as I have moved through my career or
shepherded subject areas for colleagues on sabbatical or extended
leaves. This is an article that should be in the arsenal of every
librarian.
The Anthropology and Sociology Section of the Association of College
and Research Libraries (ACRL) took on the issue of subject
bibliographers not too long ago; Maley's article appears on their
list of resources:
