Hello colleagues,
At NYPL, the Art and Picture Collection librarians now must deal with reference and reader services covering religion, social sciences and HEALTH, of all things. It is true that this happens at the largest branch of a public library, rather than at an academic institution, but it would be nice to revive the issue at the next ARLIS. I think many of us wouldn't balk too strongly at additional responsibilities in music, performing arts, classics or literature -- but, **health**?? Not exactly what I signed up for.
On the other hand, we could devise strategies to clarify the value of our particular expertise in the changing environment, with deep commitment to interactive activities like social networking, blogging, producing online exhibitions, digital literacy initiatives, programs, outreach to artistic communities, collaborative projects with other institutions, and so on and so forth. Marketing such Initiatives that broaden contact with readers/users in our particular field might have an impact. The ARLIS conference is a great place for brainstorming and sharing the rapidly expanding dimensions of art librarianship. Ideas that were floated there DEFINITELY helped me envision and implement new directions for the collections I managed.
Cheers,
