Dear Arlis members:
Many of you may not be aware of the Marfield Prize – National Award for Arts Writing. Started five years ago by the Arts Club of Washington (www.awardforartswriting.org) it is uniquely the only national award devoted exclusively to non-fiction books about the arts; from visual, media, and literature to the performing arts. It is also one of the largest monetary awards with an annual $10,000 prize.
Until recently the Arts Club had not been acquainted with Arlis! Yet we share a passionate common interest. Created to generate a broader interest in the arts among the general public, the award “celebrates prose that is lucid, luminous, clear and inspiring!”
Collectively, the Arts Club members invest hundreds of hours each year selecting what they consider to be the best books written that year on the arts. This year they received over 80 submissions from publishers across the U.S. before choosing the four Finalists to be considered by a panel of prestigious judges. Previous judges have included Joyce Carol Oates, Richard Ford, and Linda Pearl, among others.
In short, the Arts Club of Washington and Arlis share a common goal, furthering an appreciation of the arts through worthy, well-written books. The Arts Club would be delighted if its efforts and the Marfield Prize were more widely known.
Would you consider featuring the honorees in your library under the banner: Marfield Prize – National Award for Arts Writing?
This year’s four Finalists are:
Grant Wood: A Life by R. Tripp Evans ISBN# 978-0307266293 *Winner
Charlie Chan: the Untold Story of the Honorable Detective and his Rendezvous with America History by Yunte Huang ASIN # B00472TALW
The Advance Man: A Journey Into the World of the Circus by Jamie MacVicar
ISBN # 978-1-59393-203-9
Girls to the Front: the True Story of the Riot GRRRL Revolution by Sara Marcus
ISBN # 978-0061806360
Each book represents an entirely different aspect of the arts. And for the authors, for whom being awarded Finalist honors accounts for less then one percent of all books published that year, the Marfield Prize is a special achievement.
The Finalists for the preceding year are announced late spring and summer, and the Arts Club of Washington would be happy to inform Arlis of its future honorees. Your help in featuring the books and the Marfield Prize to an audience that we both wish to serve would be greatly appreciated!
I would be grateful for any comments or replies that I could forward to the Arts Club awards committee. Much thanks! Jamie MacVicar
