Welcome to the club!
We'll be embarking on a similar project (removal from stacks AND storage, unless it's a title we're holding in our JSTOR dim archive). Before we embark on the withdrawal process however we will be reviewing our titles and will do some spot checking. We'll be looking at several things, and will have the option to (very selectively) request an exemption from the withdrawal policy (for a specific reason). I plan to look at volume & image size (e.g. folio size plates of detailed architectural drawings: how well to they translate when our students print them out onto 8-1/2 X 11" paper---the only size we currently offer?) as well as image quality (if a journal's illustrations includes original etchings/lithographs or other kinds of fine printing, I may want to make a case for keeping the volumes in storage). I've heard rumors that there are titles for which illustrations were omitted (due to rights restrictions) or are low quality, so I plan to investigate this as well. And one of my colleagues knows of a title that includes monographic issues, from which students would want to read entire 300-500 page issues. It would be a hardship for students to have to print out these entire issues if they don't want to read them online. So we'll be looking at this type of expected use as well as.
Has anyone already started this kind of review of art and architecture JSTOR titles? If so, have you encountered other reasons to justify keeping print copies?
Best wishes,
Janine Henri

Subject: [ARLIS-L] JSTOR illustrations
This topic has been discussed over the years, but now that I have the
task of withdrawing all JSTOR print journals from the stacks and
storage, I need some reassurance that JSTOR's picture quality is
acceptable for art history titles. Any faculty/student complaints?
Thanks, Ruth Thomas, Mugar Library, Boston University
