The Fall meeting of the ARLIS/Western New York Chapter will be held on Friday, November 5, 2010, at the Munson-Williams-Proctor-Arts Institute, in Utica NY.
Our schedule is:
Continental breakfast and social hour (9:00-10:00 AM)
The Museum of Art building, designed by Philip Johnson, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the special exhibition “Look for Beauty: Philip Johnson and Art Museum Design.” (http://www.mwpai.org/museum-of-art/museum-of-art-calendar/look-for-beauty-philip-johnson-and-art-museum-design/). We will tour the exhibition and building with Mary Murray, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. She will also talk about Ann Reichlin’s spectacular site-specific sculpture inspired by the building (http://www.mwpai.org/museum-of-art/museum-of-art-calendar/counterpoint/) (10:00-10:45 AM)
Following our business meeting (11:00 AM) and lunch (self-treat) in the Student dining hall, from 1:30 to 2:30 PM we will visit Sculpture Space http://sculpturespace.org/, a unique artists’ residency program for sculptors. We will talk to the four sculptors in residence to learn about their projects; view a brief presentation on Griffiss International Sculpture Garden http://sculpturespace.org/sculpturepark/ in nearby Rome, NY; and view Ann Reichlin’s “Translucent House,” http://sculpturespace.org/reichlin2008/ (Ann is a Sculpture Space alumnus and lives in Ithaca). Light refreshments will be served.
After the conclusion of our visit to Sculpture Space you may wish to return to the Museum to view our other exhibitions: http://www.mwpai.org/museum-of-art/events-exhibitions/.
Registration form available on chapter website: http://arliswny.org/
A student travel award will be available. Details will be sent to the chapter list soon and will be posted on the chapter website.
P.S. One of the topics at our business meeting will be the 2012 ARLIS/NA conference in Toronto. We will probably be planning a day trip to Buffalo where we might visit the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Darwin Martin House by Frank Lloyd Wright, and other treasures of Buffalo architecture and city planning.
