Has anyone investigated whether a closed version of the database could
be included in LOCKSS. In case you don't know about LOCKSS, the
following is from their webpage
(http://lockss.stanford.edu/lockss/Home):
"LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe), based at Stanford University
Libraries, is an international community initiative that provides
libraries with digital preservation tools and support so that they can
easily and inexpensively collect and preserve their own copies of
authorized e-content. LOCKSS, in its eleventh year, provides libraries
with the open-source software and support to preserve today’s
web-published materials for tomorrow’s readers while building their
own collections and acquiring a copy of the assets they pay for, instead
of simply leasing them."
I guess the Getty would have to give permission, and of course not all
libraries belong to LOCKSS (100+ in North America do - the full list is
on the web page). Has anyone from a LOCKSS institution investigated
this?

So true, Ruth...even a closed database is better than none in this
case... I've had some messages from people about some things I've not
heard of-FRANCIA is one-does anyone have info about this?

It is unfortunate Getty (or a publisher) cannot simply host the
existing
database without adding or editing content--much like e-books
generally
work. I have heard that a publisher is interested but can't get the
French on board.
