CALL FOR PAPERS
Hemisphere: Visual Cultures of the Americas, Volume III
Deadline for Submissions: January 16, 2010
Hemisphere: Visual Cultures of the Americas is an annual
publication produced by graduate students affiliated with
the Department of Art and Art History at the University of
New Mexico. Hemisphere provides graduate students the
opportunity to publish articles, recent exhibition and
book reviews, and interviews pertaining to all aspects and
time periods of the visual and material cultures of North,
Central, South America, the Caribbean and related world
contexts.
We seek completed 20-30 page papers from advanced Ph.D.
students, and 5-10 page reviews and interviews from M.A.
and Ph.D. students, for publication in the peer-reviewed
Volume III of Hemisphere. We accept submissions written
in English or Spanish.
Topics of past articles include:
the commemoration of death and celebration of life at the
Temple of the Inscriptions, C.E. 683, Palenque, Chiapas,
Mexico; civic architecture and colonial social formation
in 16th century Santo Domingo, Hispaniola; the
construction of Brasilidade, or a notion of “Brazilness,”
at the 1939 New York World’s Fair; Cantinflas’ subversion
of hegemonic structures through his performances in
Mexican cinema; memory and exile in Abelardo Morell’s
contemporary camera obscura photographs of Havana; and
Deborah Bright’s challenge to the national narrative of
the United States through her photographs of Plymouth Rock
and stone walls in New England.
Please send a single printed hardcopy of your submission,
as well as a digitized copy on a disk to the Editorial
Committee by January 16, 2010. Notifications will be made
in March.

Each submission should be in Chicago style format and must
be accompanied by a cover letter that prominently notes
the title of the essay, the field of study to which it
pertains, as well as a curriculum vitae that includes the
author’s status (i.e. Ph.D. student or Ph.D. candidate),
department, and institution name and location.
Journal contributors receive 5 complimentary copies.
Additionally, authors of 20-30 page papers published in
Hemisphere will be invited to participate in a symposium
in the Fall of 2010 at the University of New Mexico, where
they will present their essay.

La revista Hemisphere es una publicación anual editada y
producida por los estudiantes de posgrado del departamento
de Arte e Historia del Arte de la Universidad de Nuevo
Mexico. Hemisphere ofrece a estudiantes de posgrado la
oportunidad de publicar artículos, reseñas de libros y de
exhibiciones recientes y entrevistas concernientes a
cualquier aspecto y periodo de la cultura visual y
material de Norte, Centro, y Sud América, el Caribe
incluido, así como de contextos mundiales relacionados.
Se buscan ensayos completos de 20-30 páginas desarrollados
por estudiantes de doctorado. Al igual se hace el
llamado a estudiantes de nivel doctoral y de maestría para
proponer entrevistas y reseñas sobre publicaciones o
exhibiciones recientes, los que deben ser de 5 a 10
páginas. Todos estos serán considerados para p
ublicación
en el tercer volumen de las revista arbitrada (revisada
por colegas) Hemisphere, y pueden ser escritos en inglés o
en español.
Algunos de los temas de publicaciones pasadas son:
La construcción de “Brasilidade” ,o la noción de
“Brasilidad”, en la Feria Mundial de Nueva York en 1939;
Memoria y exilio en las fotografías de cámara obscura del
fotógrafo cubano Abelardo Morell; La subversión de
estructuras hegemónicas en el cine Mexicano a través de la
actuación de Cantinflas; Arquitectura civil y formación
colonial en el Santo Domingo del siglo XVI; El desafío de
Deborah Bright hacia la narrativa nacional de los Estados
Unidos a trevés de su fotografías de Plymouth Rock y las
paredes de piedra de Nueva Inglaterra.
Por favor de mandar una copia impresa de su ensayo o
reseña y una copia digitalizada al Comité Editorial antes
del 16 de Enero del 2010. Las notificaciones de
aceptación se harán durante el mes de Marzo.
Propuestas hechas por correo electrónico no serán

Todo texto presentado debe seguir el formato de estilo
Chicago. También, cada ensayo o reseña debe estar
acompañado de una carta de presentación que claramente
indique el título, el área de estudio a la que pertenece,
al igual que un currículo vitae que incluya el estatus del
estudiante (i.e. estudiante o candidato al doctorado),
departamento académico, nombre y locadad de la
institución.
Los contribuyentes a la revista recibirán cinco copias de
ésta. Además, los autores de los ensayos de 20-30 páginas
que se publiquen serán invitados a participar en el
simposio del otoño de 2010 en la Universidad de Nuevo
Mexico, donde podrán presentar sus ensayos.
