A related thought--which may be of more relevance to museum archivists than
librarians--museum object labels often have more information than the
shorter type of label usually found on a website or in a collection catalog.
It's very helpful for research to make sure that those labels are copied to
go into the archives for an exhibition. This applies to other contextual
signage that is part of an exhibition as well. And it applies especially to
exhibitions that do not have an accompanying catalog.
Of course, neither museum archivists nor museum librarians are usually
involved in the archiving of exhibition-related materials--until after the
fact. Just a thought for those lucky few who may have input into the
exhibition planning process.

Subject: Re: [ARLIS-L] how to cite museum labels
I came across the same issue recently -- if the information on the museum
label also appears on the museum's website or collection catalogs (which it
often does), those sources can be cited instead.

I've checked the indexes of Chicago, MLA, Turabian, and Evidence
Explained without finding any guidelines for citing museum labels. A
professor of Egyptology has asked me for advice. Her students are
writing their research papers about single objects in nearby museum
collections. Some of them may want to cite museum labels among their
sources.
I can find some suggestions online, but none so far that seems
authoritative. I welcome your suggestions. I'm sure that museum
librarians must have preferences, at least, about how labels are cited.
