I have been an ARLIS/NA member for 32 years and have gone to all the
national conferences save one--and several regional conferences--during that
period. ARLIS was my lifeline when I worked in a small art museum library
and continued to be an inspiration and information source and my community
of good friends when I went to work for a large art museum library. Most of
the time I had to pay for about half of my travel expenses but it was worth
it. Go to the ARLIS/NA website and check out the pictures and testimonials
from members (click on "Learn more about us and the benefits of membership"
and then "What Our Members Are Saying").
I have also been an ALA member for that whole time both to keep up with
librarianship in general and to support ALA's national lobbying efforts and
publications program. And for a few years (when I had sufficient grant
money) I was also a member of SLA and the AAM (the American Asssociation of
Museums). But if I had to choose, there's no question I'd choose ARLIS and,
especially, its conferences, which are wonderful fun!
