Hello Margaret/ARLIS/NA:
It could be helpful to provide a list of suggestions for budget reductions which might protect library/vr positions. There are professionals on this listserv who have experienced reductions before so sharing ideas may save jobs.
here are a few suggestions from my very small world
1. digital printing for letterhead
a. one color printing on envelopes
b. a generic logo design for business cards - where individuals write name and title
2. if any campus or large organization is using white paper towels in restrooms and other facilities you can save by ordering brown towels, it is green and less expensive - also check your supplier sometimes there are suppliers that are less expensive close by without adding shipping costs
3. re-negotiate your copy machine/scanner/printer contracts from a campus wide administrative office i.e. the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics negotiates contracts for machines for every dept. in the entire hospital complex and saves a lot of money by creating bulk ordering and management
note: if you are employed by a large organization, the key is to find items that can be ordered in bulk where prices and services can be negotiated
4. create complimentary collections (serial, book) with art organizations in close proximity
5. if you really care about guarding serial titles make sure that students have assignments that are directly linked to the titles that you want to hold on to, make your collection more visible to the students
In any case, I am not sure if any of these ideas can work for anyone but please add to the list.
Another note: NY Times 9/11/2009 Business Section "Harvard Endowment Falls 27.3% and Yale's Fund is Down 30%."
Good luck,
