I have read this thread with much interest, and am, for once, moved to
respond. First, let me make it clear that I am writing as a long-time
ARLIS member, not as a board member; these are my individual comments
and do not reflect any official stance. That being said ... progress
happens. When I first joined ARLIS, while we did have electricity, many
folks did not have email. There were no lists, no presence on the web,
no web. Having a presence on Facebook, or Second Life (unless that's
already totally last year), or anything else obviates neither the need
nor the benefit of ARLIS-L. ARLIS-L is often useful, occasionally
amusing, and almost always available. Social networking sites like
Facebook are not always available from one's place of employment, and
may not be an option for those whose employers regularly monitor email
(which is more of you than you think). If you don't want to be inundated
with messages, choose the digest mode of receiving list mail; or just
graze through the archives, as Max suggests. Or yes, use your delete
button. And if you want to join Facebook, go ahead. I would hope that
those members who are trolling all sites of interest will be willing to
share what they learn on one forum with those on the other forum. You
can entertain us as we sit on the porch of the old librarians' home,
swinging our canes.
