Dear B.J.
Thanks for writing this to ARLIS-L. Like the lives of many others, my life
changed dramatically upon meeting Judy in 1976 and then in 1977 attending
the conference she and Amy Ciccone had organized in Los Angeles. She (and
the organization she introduced me to) really made me see L.A.--and other
cities--in a way I'm sure it would have taken me many years otherwise to
begin to comprehend: as cities of artists. To me she came to embody the
best of ARLIS: a friend who was outspoken, articulate (a GREAT storyteller),
curious about and supportive of all kinds of art and artists. Living
artists, not just their art, were important to her. It's really impossible
to believe this "dynamo," as you accurately described her, has been
silenced.
Joan

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Thoughts about Judith Hoffberg
Surely Judy was the dynamo behind the founding of ARLIS/NA. I fondly recall
seeing this amazingly energetic woman "flying about" at our early meetings
working on what seemed to be every aspect of 1970s conferences. Thankfully,
her legacy to the Society and love of travel are annually recognized by the
"Judith A. Hoffberg Student Award for Conference Attendance."
I look forward to our honoring Judy at the ARLIS/NA annual conference in
Indianapolis this year!
