CALL FOR PAPERS FOR A 2009 SPECIAL SECTION OF ARCHIVIARA
ON "QUEER
ARCHIVES"
It is a generally recognized fact that public archives
have seldom
documented the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgendered
individuals, leading many queer people, like Canadian gay
activist Jim
Egan (1921-2000), to deplore the conspiracy of silence
that has robbed
queer Canadians of their history and of the evidential
value of their
lives (Donna Jean MacKinnon, ?Taking Pride in Homosexual
History?, The
Toronto Star, 19 June 2003, p. J04). Queer archives have
arisen from this
dearth of representation as a means to capture and
preserve this neglected
history. The development of queer collections has not only
served to
support the communities they document, but it has also
helped foster a new
discipline of sexual diversity studies. As 2009 marks the
fortieth
anniversary of both the decriminalization of homosexuality
in Canada and
the Stonewall Inn Riots in New York City, the editorial
board of
Archivariais planning to include a special section devoted
to queer
archives in Archivaria 68 (Fall 2009).
Marcel Barriault and Rebecka Sheffield will serve as Guest
Editors of this
special section.
Contributions to this special section, in either English
or French, should
address issues related to sexual diversity (gay, lesbian,
bisexual,
transgendered, transsexual, intersexed, two-spirited and
questioning
identities). Papers are solicited on, but not limited to,
the following
topics:
- An exploration of the history and development of gay and
lesbian
archives;
- An analysis of archival practice and how this affects
queer archival
collections;
- The examination of a particular queer collection;
- An investigation of access and privacy issues related to
queer archives;
- A response to collecting records that reflect trans
history and
community development;
- An examination of the ways archival descriptive
standards reveal and
conceal sexual diversity.
Papers are not limited to a specific time or place and may
include
collections held in archives outside of Canada or produced
outside of
Canada.
Expressions of interest consisting of an abstract of the
proposed article
(300-500 words) must be received by the co-editors by
October 31, 2008.
Completed manuscripts are due March 31, 2009.
Final submissions should follow the ?Advice to Authors of
Submissions to
