I would be more inclined to believe that ALA would take a principled stand
if Palin could be directly tied to specific requests to ban certain titles
from the Wasilla, AK, Public Library, or to other actions directly connected
with the operation of that facility. In the September, 2008, issue of
AMERICAN LIBRARIES the current president of ALA Jim Rettig in a piece
entitled "A Fundamental Freedom; Celebrate during Banned Books Weeks" says
that: "Chris Crutcher, Lois Lowry, and other authors whose books regularly
come under assault from would-be censors will share their work September
27th in Chicago to kick off the celebration. ALA Office for Intellectual
Freedom Directior Judith Krug, ALA Executive Director Keith Michael Fiels,
and I (Jim Rettig) will participate in a readout at Pioneer Plaza, just
steps from the McCormick Freedom Museum, the nation's first museum dedicated
to freedom and the First Amendment." This was all published and distributed
in late August, and certainly before Palin's candidacy became public
knowledge. So again I would be surprised if the above magazine does not
make some mention of this banned books brouhaha associated with Palin in the
forthcoming monthly issue; I suspect that ALA may also be "getting its ducks
in a row" before it makes any official statements..
