Bill,
Cataloging Cultural Objects says this about weight (p. 113):
Include the weight of the work when it is significant (for example, for a coin or a megalithic stone).
Example (for a carved gem)
Measurements display: 31 mm (1 1/8 inch) (diameter), 7.32 g (.2354 troy ounce)
Controlled fields:
Value: 31; Unit: mm; Type: diameter
Value: 7.32; Unit: gram; Type: weight
Since the Met's collection database is quite full of good records, I tried to find an object record in which the public display gave the weight. I tried big and small but didn't find one. Tried MoMA and no weights are given for Richard Serra pieces or the VW Beetle. There's a Willys Quarter Ton Jeep but I think that's load capacity rather than object weight.
Ever onward.....
