Hello collective wisdom,
I'm helping staff at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) weed a
collection of books used by their docents. In conversations with UMMA staff
I've noticed that they have many questions about the possibility of starting
their own in-house library (questions which I don't feel qualified to answer
and which go beyond the small weeding project I'm working on for them).
From what I can gather, this discussion is in the early stages, and they
would likely benefit from chatting with art museum librarians at peer
institutions. Staff at UMMA were unaware of the existence of ARLIS/NA or
the Museum Division within it.
Would anyone out there be interested in offering sage advice to UMMA staff?
I'd be more than happy to pass your contact info along. Individuals in the
the ARLIS/Midstates Chapter would be particularly helpful, but my query is
open to all who would be able to provide guidance to UMMA staff during this
period of growth and change (they are moving to a renovated and expanded
building later this year, with the opening scheduled for Spring 2009).
It's likely that UMMA staff would have questions about a range of topics,
everything from art museum library missions or goals, services provided,
staffing, technical processing, etc.
I've already started pulling together a bibliography for them (including
Joan Benedetti's recent volume, of course), so any "must reads" you can
think of would also be helpful.
Thanks,
Meredith
