Dear colleagues,
I have also just written a piece about organizing the Pratt Institute
Libraries' first series of Library Open House events, both at the
Brooklyn and Manhattan campuses. My article will be appearing in an
upcoming issue of "Unabashed Librarian," and I can send out a more
detailed citation once the piece is published
(http://www.unabashedlibrarian.com/).
The piece is a general how-to offering advice from my experiences and
speaks generally toward academic libraries and also to our local
community of art, design and architecture students at Pratt.

So after students and parents register, they are directed to come right up to the Library to start their day. We offer morning refreshments and informally meet & greet them as they come on in. The open house runs for about 1 1/2 hours, and the attendees wax and wane over that time. We have found it to be very successful. In that the parents are made aware of all the services and resources we have available. The students prior to the first day of classes, know exactly where the Library is in the building (unfortunately we are located on the 2nd floor). So the Library Open House continues on here at Kendall.

Sometimes I have mailed flyers to library users, other libraries, and colleagues. I typically have the event on Thursday evenings from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. We usually get about 20 people. We do two tours lasting about 30 minutes each. People can also browse the library on their own. I serve wine, cheese, and other refreshments. We have two small exhibition cases. The people who come enjoy it and sometimes come back as patrons, volunteers, or interns. That' about it.

> Gail - this is why I am trying to create partnerships with Academic/ Museum institutions (part of my presentation at ARLIS this year). I encourage faculty to use our collections and even will set up a HOLD shelf for them to do research or if they want their class to see material. We are also working on some kind of Digital Service to start digitizing research material. I just installed a new color Overhead scanner. I built a rapport with the Cleveland Museum of Art librarians to encourage their curators and assistants to use the collection and let them use our scanner.
