In regard to your post--I too am willing to do just about anything to get people in the (library) doors,
including storytimes and book discussions. I rarely do formal "open house" es, but sometimes have
the library open at unusual times during big events here at the KIA (exhibition openings, etc.) I have
also collaborated with librarians at the local public libraries with programs and publications (bibliographies).
Depending on the event, I may advertise in our quarterly newsletter or during weekly programs which
take place at the KIA.

In the 2008-2009 academic year we will be having our 4th Kendall College Library Open House. We are a small school with 1200 students, so we
coordinate this annual open house with the fall new student orientation day. Our open house is the first segment of the orientation event. So after students and parents register, they are directed to come right up to the Library to start their day. We offer morning refreshments and informally meet & greet them as they come on in. The open house runs for about 1 1/2 hours, and the attendees wax and wane over that time. We have found it to be very successful. In that the parents are made aware of all the services and resources we have available. The students prior to the first day of classes, know exactly where the Library is in the building (unfortunately we are located on the 2nd floor). So the Library Open House continues on here at Kendall.
As for promotion it is detailed in the new student orientation packets that go out in the mail, as well as in the packets they pick up the day of the event. I usually throw in a giveaway. This year it was a custom designed magnet with our URL, Library hours, and Circ desk phone number.

For National Library Week and Archives Week/Month, I often host a library open house with a behind the scenes tour of our special collection storage areas.
We advertise in our museum newsletter and through e-blasts/invitations to museum members, library users, professional colleagues and other libraries and archives. Sometimes I have mailed flyers to library users, other libraries, and colleagues. I typically have the event on Thursday evenings from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. We usually get about 20 people. We do two tours lasting about 30 minutes each. People can also browse the library on their own. I serve wine, cheese, and other refreshments. We have two small exhibition cases. The people who come enjoy it and sometimes come back as patrons, volunteers, or interns. That' about it.

Gail - this is why I am trying to create partnerships with Academic/ Museum institutions (part of my presentation at ARLIS this year). I encourage faculty to use our collections and even will set up a HOLD shelf for them to do research or if they want their class to see material. We are also working on some kind of Digital Service to start digitizing research material. I just installed a new color Overhead scanner. I built a rapport with the Cleveland Museum of Art librarians to encourage their curators and assistants to use the collection and let them use our scanner.
