*THE SECRETS OF PURGATORY PIE PRESS REVEALED!* at the Fleet Library
at Rhode Island School of Design
An exhibition of Purgatory Pie Press artist books and limited edition
books will be on display in RISD*s new library JANUARY 30th THROUGH
FEBRUARY 20th, 2008. As described on their website
http://purgatorypiepress.com , Purgatory Pie Press started shortly
after *Dikko Faust spilled (or pied) an overfilled case of 8 pt
Century Oldstyle his first day at Walter Hamady's letterpress class*
at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. *Esther K Smith entered
Purgatory when they made their wedding invitation in 1980*. Since
then the Press has had exhibitions at London's Victoria and Albert
Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harper Collins Gallery, Harvard
University and Smith College. Purgatory Pie Press has collaborated with
more than 100 artists and writers and is known for its inventive and
playful use of antique wood and lead type. Smith and Faust teach artist
books, letterpress, and graphic design at Cooper Union, School of
Visual Arts & City University of New York.
This exhibit features book models used to illustrate the various types
of bookbinding structures in Esther K Smith*s first mainstream
published book, HOW TO MAKE BOOKS, designed with hand set type by
Purgatory Pie Press plus graphic designer Kathleen Phelps and published
in November 2007 by Potter Craft, an imprint of Random House. The
exhibit also highlights drawings, test prints, mock-ups and camera ready
work for this publication, showing the evolution of its page layouts.
Selections of PPP limited edition books, postcards, coasters, Purgatoys
and other ephemera from the Press and the library*s collection as well
as works by Susan Happersett, Elizabeth Duffy, China Marks, illustrator
Lindsay Stadig, Sarah Ballard, and photographers David Michael Zimmerman
