Hi Sue. My experience with FileMaker Pro is that each
new version is only capable of reading the previous
generation *only*.
For example, when I upgraded from Filemaker 5 to 7
(skipping v.6) I actually had to install version 6 and
migrate my files through that and then bring them into
v.7. Does this make sense? In other words, v.7 did not
reach back in time beyond v.6.
So you have a dilemma in getting those v.4 files up to
date. I wish I knew what to tell you. I'm sure there
are vendors that could help.
As far as migrating information to Excel, this is
something that current versions of FileMaker do well.
It's not really a file conversion; rather, information
is exported from FM to Excel, for such purposes as
reporting or whatever (subsequent changes to the FM
records will not change the Excel document). I get the
sense you are looking to get out of FM altogether and
work on Excel. Migrating the information to an Excel
doc and working from there is a totally feasible
solution.
