Greetings colleagues,
Those of you in university and college branch libraries...
This information will be extremely useful as I work on a modest renovation
proposal. I'll share results with the list.
I've included my own answers to these questions to get the ball rolling.
When you reply to me ([log in to unmask]) please delete my answers.
1) Do you have an instructional or multi-purpose room(s) within your
security perimeter? Please do not count staff spaces. Where is this room
located in relation the to remainder of the library space? Rough
dimensions, please.
I have one space, the "Rare Book Room", aka RBR. It is located in the
basement stacks. Approximate size is 12' x 30'.
2) How do you use this space? Bibliographic instruction, rare material
showing, outside classes, exhibitions?
The room contains part of our Art special collections and is kept locked.
It contains two viewing tables. We use the RBR as our special collection
teaching space. We can comfortably take in about 20 students for viewings.
3) If outside classes, do you control scheduling or does the related
academic department or registrar?
Since the room houses special materials, we control use of the space. On
occasion we have allowed the Art Dept. to use the RBR as a regular teaching
space, but rarely.
4) How are your rooms equipped? Wired, projection walls, ceiling mounted
screens, "smart" rooms? Conversely, how are they NOT equipped? What could
you use/implement if you had additional functionality?
The room has bookshelves on three of four walls. There are no power outlets
and only overhead lights that operate off of a single switch. No internet
connection, and it is so distant from the wireless hub that wireless access
is intermittent. If we removed the special collection materials and if the
room was properly equipped we would: 1) use it for bibliographic
instruction; 2) schedule in one to two art history classes a quarter (the
Dept. is in desperate need of additional teaching space - but we would
control scheduling); 3) allow students to schedule the room for group
study; and, 4) continue to use it to show special collection materials to
classes. A real multi-purpose space.
5) Do you actively publicize the availability of this space? If so, why? If
not, why?
No. Due to its current use as a special collections space, we restrict access.
6) How old is your building? Recently renovated?
Early 70s. Poured concrete. No recent renovations.
Regards, and best of the New Year, new semester, new quarter, etc. and so on,
Peter Blank
